The institute is part of Birmingham University and has a small but relevant collection of paintings, engravings, prints, drawings and sculptures of European artists such as Whistler, Gainsborough, Gauguin, Picasso Bellini, Degas, Monet, Poussing, Turner, Holbein and Van Gogh. The museum is located in one of the most beautiful Art Deco buildings in the city, opened by Queen Mary in 1939. The museum is located 5 km away from downtown. To get to it you need to take bus number 61, 62 or 63. The entrance to the museum is free.
Ikon Gallery
Ikon is the main gallery in Birmingham that displays works of contemporary art from all over England. It is located in a former Victorian school built in a Gothic style. Ikon Gallery organizes exhibitions on the two floors of the building, with a total area of 450 square meters. Admission inside Ikon Gallery is free.
St.Paul Gallery
St Paul Gallery is a true treasure in terms of album covers, band pictures, engravings and paintings, a happy blend between visual arts and music. The gallery holds signed covers and images that belong to Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, Queen, David Bowie & The Beatles, Snow Patrol, Lily Allen, Coldplay & Kings of Leon. Artists include Peter Blake, Storm Thorgerson, Aubrey Powell.
The Avoncroft Museum of Historical Buildings
Avoncroft is an outdoor museum where visitors can admire the architecture of the middle region of England: Victorian baskets, phone booths, a prefabricated house in 1946, a functional windmill. The museum saved over 25 buildings from damage.
The museum is located 25 kilometers away from Birmingham, in the south-west. It’s most busy in the morning when usually groups of students go to visit it so, if you’re planning to head to Avoncroft, we suggest you to do it in the afternoon. Entry costs £ 6.6.
Pen Room
Pen Room is a museum dedicated to pencils and to the pen industry. In the 19th century Birmingham was center of the world of writing instruments production. Today the museum is located in a former factory and has a huge collection of creyons, feathers, pens, pencils, ink and other souvenirs of that era. The museum is open between 11 and 16 and admission is free.
Think Tank
ThinkTank is an interactive science museum that allows you to explore the history of Birmingham, spread over four floors of galleries. You can see how steam engines work, explore the space, program a robot to beat the drums, and help in a hip surgery. There are over 200 exhibits to play with as the mad scientist. Museum houses an IMAX cinema and a planetarium. ThinkTank is located in the Millennium Centre, 10 minutes from Moor Street station.
