Construction of Tilbury Port started in 1882, after many years of failed initiatives from the East and West India Docks Company. An Act of Parliament was released in that year which allowed the company to build the port under London Bridge. Tilbury Port saw the first ship to enter the docks four years later, on 17 April, when Glenfruin anchored there, carrying the official party for the opening ceremony. Not late after, the construction of Tilbury Port proved to be a success, the business developing rapidly.
A heritage plaque honoring the 60th anniversary of this celebration is viewable in the Cruise Terminal underneath Jeremy Deller’s banner, which was entered for the Turner Prize in 2004.
In the 1970′s, with the decline of the British Liner Fleet, the Terminal wasn’t used anymore and the railway station shut down. The breakthrough of cruising gave birth to new opportunities and the terminal re-opened in 1995 and still offers a full service to the new European cruise market, a base for fascinating voyages to the Baltic and travelers to London and the East of England.
