Transfer from Tower Hamlets (E14) to Gatwick Airport
Nobody knows for sure from where the Isle of Dogs gets its weird name. History suggests quite a few options like maybe it’s the fact that dogs were often washed up on the banks of the Thames or maybe it’s a nickname as living on the Isle of Dogs was considered to be a “dog’s life”. Other facts may point that the names comes from the dogs of Henry VIII which kept his hunting dogs there.
Located pretty far from the City of London the Isle of Dogs includes towns such as Millwall, cubbit Town and Blackwall. It has been populated since the 13th century but, due to a catastrophic event in 1488, people were forced to live the area which stayed inhabited until Dutch engineers efficiently re-drained it in the 17th century. One important feature in the development of the Isle of Dogs were the Docks which attracted a lot of related companies, such as flour and sugar processing, and also ship constructing.
In the past centuries Blackwall was a major port with connection to the ocean and was linked with significant expeditions. For example, one of this expeditions was led by Martin Frobisher set sail from Blackwall, seeking the North West Passage. Another important period in Blackwall’s history happened in the early years of the 17th century when the port was the primary departure point of the English colonization of North America and the West Indies.
