The name of the town comes from “Cissan dun”, an Anglo – Saxon term meaning “Cissa’s hill”. In the Domesday Book, the settlement appears like Cisendone and Cisedune and it looks like it was owned by Milo Crispin and Robert de Wateville. The Chessington World of Adventures features a house dating from that era. It’s called the Burnt Stub and it was constructed in 1348. The property was demolished by Oliver Cromwell and then rebuilt in the 18th century. It was bigger and featured a beautiful Victorian style that has survived till date.
There have been numerous notable residents in Chessington. Some of the most famous were the actor Barry Chuckle, the engineer Harry Hawker, the TV presenter Helen Chamberlain, the author Enid Blyton and the singer Petula Clark.
