Transfer from City of London (EC3) to Heathrow Airport
If referring to architecture I could easily name EC3 as the district of variety as it combines old and new architecture, in ancient and modern buildings. From the Monument of Great fire of London to the bizarre shaped building on St. Mary Axe or the ultra-popular Tower of London, this side is for sure a delight for sightseeing enthusiasts.
If you pass through St. Mary Axe you may the tried by one of two feeling when crossing nearby the strange shaped building constructed on the former site of the Baltic Exchange. First you will think it’s a rocket getting ready for take-off, while second you’d surely say that the design is close to the one of an Easter Egg. Well, you’re two times wrong because the weird looking architectural masterpiece is only the Gherkin, no. 30 St. Mary Axe.
St. Mary Axe was initially a medieval parish in ancient times, dedicated to the Virgin Mary. Only the name survived since those historical times, bared by the street that crosses the land where the church once stood. It’s been the streets mission to carry on the name trough centuries since 1561 when the church was demolished and the parish combined with the one of St. Andrew Undershaft.
Some other medieval places still stand, being more fortunate than St. Mary church and you can visit them by taking transport to Great St. Helen’s (1210) and St. Ethelburga (1300s).
