Transfer from Southwark (SE1) to Heathrow Airport
The first of the postal districts in the South East regions provides us with one of the oldest settlements in the UK, approximately 6000 years old. The area developed when a bridge was built near the present day London Bridge, during the time the Romans built Londinium on the north side of the Thames. The region encircling the bridge has been inhabited ever since. The primary events that attracted people to Bankside were the brothels, public theatres, animal-baiting pits, events often held at the same time. The most important playhouses in Bankside during the Tudor area were the Swan, The Rose, the Hope and the Globe. They were also some of the first ever in London. Some important writers lived here, the most notable being, with no doubt, William Shakespeare.
Today Bankside is a district of London and forms part of the Borough of Southwark. The district is situated on the southern bank of the River Thames, 2.4 km east of Charing Cross. Bankside is portion of a business developing district known as Better Bankside. It is known to hold UK’s biggest museum of modern art – The Tate Modern. The museum is part of the regeneration Bankside experienced in recent decades, the development making the region a significant tourist attraction as well as a business improvement district. Tate Modern can be found in the building of Bankside Power Station.
