The lake was laid out by the Duke of Cumberland, William, in 1746. The existing lake is larger than the original one. The second lake was built by Thomas and Paul Sandby in 1780. They also added an extra feature: an artificial waterfall. The Obelisk Pond and the Meadow Pond were also added in 1780. The Virginia Water Lake was featured in numerous Harry Potter movies.
