After this purchase the Buckingham Palace became known as “Queen’s House”. Starting with 1837, after the coronation of Queen Victoria, the palace became the home of British monarchs. Queen Victoria became a resident of the place and also ordered a few developments, like the 3 corners around the central yard. Edward Blore and John Nash were chosen to work as architects to the expansion of Buckingham Palace. The last modifications were brought to the palace at the beginning of the 20th century. This included the eastern façade with the well-known balcony from where the Royal Family salutes the crowds in Victoria Square.
Today Buckingham Palace is the Queen’s official London home and mostly used to receive guests of value or holds ceremonial and official events for the Royal Family. The Palace is situated between Hyde Park,The Green Park and St. James’s Park.
You can visit Buckingham Palace during August or September when the Queen makes her annual visit to Balmoral. Permission for tourists is granted only to the 19th state rooms, ballroom and gardens. But don’t worry, you won’t miss much as some of the greatest treasures are found in the State rooms, including impressive French and English pieces of furniture and important paintings.
Probably one of the most known features of the Palace is the “Changing the Guard” ceremony that takes place every day the forecourt, at exactly 11.30 and last for approximately 45 minutes.
