Transfer from Ashtead (KT21) to Stansted Airport
In the early 20th century, Ashtead was known for the famous and prestigious Ashtead Pottery. The business was opened in 1923, but unfortunately it was closed in 1935. The creator of the company was Lawrence Weaver. He wanted to help the ex – servicemen who fought in the First World War by offering them a job. In the beginning, the factory had only 4 workers, but it soon flourished and it grew to become one of the biggest and most influential companies of the time.
The Ashtead Pottery used to produce numerous wares such as commemoratives and figures. They were designed by famous artists like Percy Metcalfe and Phoebe Stabler. The everyday crockery had Art Deco designs. The British Empire Exhibitions in 1925 and 1924 housed items produced by the Ashtead Potters. The factory was closed in 1935 because of the Great Depression. The building itself was demolished in 1985. Today, you can only see a plaque on the Lime Tree Court that reminds of the old Ashtead Pottery.
