Transfer from Gatwick Airport to Waterloo Station
The station grew quite rapidly, but it soon became ramshackle. The first station constructed in 1848 was renamed Central Station and newer platforms were built. The platform sets got names like Khartoum Station and Cyprus Station. Each of them featured public entrances, a car stand and a booking office. In 1899, Waterloo Station featured 16 platforms. There was even a railway line that passed through the main concourse and the Waterloo East, a small station adjacent to the main building. This layout was extremely confusing for the passengers.
The Waterloo Station was completely rebuilt in 1899. The renovation work officially begun in 1904. There were different opening stages. The first 5 platforms were finished in 1910. During the World War I, the construction continued and in 1922, the new station building was opened. It featured a concourse measuring 800 feet in length and 21 platforms. This new structure featured a stained glass window representing the company crest of L&SWR. The frieze that surrounds the glass includes a list with all the counties served by the Waterloo Station. That list is still visible today.
