The Clock Tower is an important feature of the town. It was constructed by the Royal Mason, Thomas Wolvey, from 1403 to 1412. The Clock Tower still features the original bell. It was last used to ring out the funeral of Queen Victoria, in 1901. The bell weighs one ton. Until the early 20th century, the tower’s ground floor housed a shop. The second and first floors accommodated living chambers. The bell and the clock could be accessed by climbing 93 narrow steps. In the 18th century, a pendulum clock replaced the old one. The mechanism was designed by Lord Grimthorpe, who also created the escapement of the Big Ben.
