The joint station was enlarged several times by the LB&SCR Company. The lines were electrified in the early 20th century. The last major redevelopment work took place from 1972 till 1978. A new station concourse was added and a re-signalling scheme was made. The new station was opened in 1978 and it was considered one of Britain’s best station reconstructions.
