The Victoria Line opened at the Oxford Circus Station in 1969. It brought more passenger loads, so it required the construction of another ticket hall. It was placed beneath the road junction. The construction of the hall ticket lasted 5 years, between 1963 and 1968. The entire traffic was diverted on a temporary bridge constructed over the Oxford Street and Regent Street intersection. The telecom cables and the services tunnels were built so as to ease the traffic. The Victoria line tunnels, as well as the linking passages and the escalator shafts were constructed from access shafts from Argyll Street, Upper Regent Street and Cavendish Square.
The Bakerloo platforms are parallel with the Victoria platforms. This formed a cross – platform interchange used to link the two lines. Additional escalators were introduced and all the old lifts were removed. This led to an innovative one – way circulation plan.
A renovation project was put into practice in 1984. The same year, one of the platforms was burned out by a severe fire. Due to this incident, the trains now have a smoking ban.
