Transfer from Stansted Airport to Central London
A landmark that should not be missed in Central London is the Palace of Westminster. This palace accommodates the House of Lords and the House of Commons. These two houses form the Parliament in the UK. The Palace is also known as the Houses of Parliament. It sits on River Thames’ Middlesex bank and it got the name from Westminster Abbey.
The first palace was constructed on those grounds in the 11th century and at the time it was the London residence for the Kings of England. The complex was destroyed by a fire in 1512. After it was rebuilt, it became the Parliament’s home and it also accommodated the Royal Courts of Justice. The rebuilt palace was once again destroyed by a fire in 1834. The only structures that survived were the Jewel Tower, the St Mary Undercroft Chapel, the Cloisters of St Stephen’s and the Westminster Hall.
The current Palace was designed by Charles Barry and it features an impressive Perpendicular Gothic style. It was rebuilt between 1840 and 1870. Nowadays, the Westminster Palace is a World Heritage Site and a Grade I building.
The Palace of Westminster is best known for the Elizabeth Tower that houses the world famous Big Ben. This main bell is not only the most renowned tourist attraction, but also a symbol for the parliamentary democracy. The tower was renamed the Elizabeth Tower to celebrate Queen Elizabeth II’s Diamond Jubilee. It features the world’s largest 4–faced chiming clock. Moreover, it is one of the world’s tallest free-standing clock towers. The tower dates from 1858. It measures 315 feet in height and it features a superb Gothic Revival style. The design of the clock and the dials was signed by Augustus Pugin.
Big Ben is the main bell in the tower. It is also the largest. The current bell measures 9 feet in diameter and 7 feet and 6 inches in height. This bell chimed for the first time in 1859. The Big Ben is often featured in visual media as a symbol for London and the United Kingdom.
