Short History of Stansted Airport
The history of Stansted Airport begins in 1942 when it became a USAAF runaway. In 1966 BAA took control over the airport and in 1970 was extended the new terminal in order to fulfil the needs of the increasing number of passengers. In 1980 the Government approved BAA’s plan of development for the airport which was going to handle over 15 million passengers a year. In April 1986, work started on the development of the airport. In March 1991, the Queen officially opened the new terminal. The cost of the works was of £400 million. In June 1999 the permission was granted for the second phase of development of the airport. In 2000, the work on the second phase of development started. That involved the expansion of the airport to approximately 25 million passengers per year. London Stansted’s interim master plan was released in 2005.
