Transfer from Peckham (SE15) to Luton Airport
A must – see attraction in Peckham is the Peckham Library. The library also serves as a community building. The design of the building was signed by Stormer and Alsop and it’s extremely innovative and creative. Due to its uniqueness, it also won in 2000 the Stirling Prize for Architecture. The building is striking and distinctive and its shape looks like an inverted “L” capital letter. The upper part of the structure features thin steel pillars that are placed at random angles. The exterior is the one that impresses the most. It is made from pre – patinated copper and clad. The Peckham Library also includes an Afro – Caribbean book section, special areas for children and various meeting rooms.
The judges who awarded the Stirling prize were extremely impressed by the approach of the building. Alsop didn’t want to design a conventional library. Thus, he took a different plan footprint approach, elevating it and creating a fine public space just below the structure. At the same time, the elevation offered a quiet reading space. The other supporting buildings situated at the ground floor are used to accommodate a media and information centre.
