Transfer from London City Airport to Port of London

The River Thames together with its canals and tributaries features a wide array of gas works and power stations. The major gasworks are situated at East Greenwich and Beckton. The power stations can be seen at Grain, Hackney, Tilbury, West Ham, Northfleet, Kingston, West Thurrock, Fulham, Barking, Battersea, Greenwich, Deptford and Stepney. Because of these gas works and power stations, much of the post – war trade in London consisted of coal cargo. The coal was not handled in the docks, but in the coal handling facilities located by the river. London’s trade has dropped considerably since the mid – 20^th century, mainly because the gas works were closed and the coal trade was lost. Moreover, the coal imports in London fell to 0 after the Tilbury Power Station became known mainly for burning biomass.

Port of London will soon be expanded with a new facility located at the refinery site at Shell Haven. The new facility will be able to handle deep-sea container ships and will also feature a business and logistics park covering an area of 300 hectares. This new construction is expected to re-establish the pre-eminence of London in what regards the port industry.
