Transfer from the City of London (EC1) to London City Airport
St. Bartholomew’s Hospital is one of the most beautiful historical places that can be admired in the City of London and its great significance is given by the fact that the building is the oldest hospital in London. Founded in 1123 you will still find the hospital on the ground it was originally laid along with the only existing statue of King Henry VIII.
Barts as the commoners call it was founded by Rahere, a courtier favoured by King Henry I. The activity of the hospital wasn’t affected by the Dissolution of the Monasteries but Barts was left in a dangerous position because all incomes were removed. The reason for the existing statue of King Henry VIII is the fact that in 1546 he re-founded St. Bartholomew’s Hospital and helped it develop even further. Barts was subject to closure many times since than for different reasons but the hospital saved itself each time and still has medical activities running inside its walls.
A museum can also be located inside its walls with a collection of historic sculptures, medical archives, surgical instruments and works of art including painting by William Hogarth. You can find the museum in the North wing. Barts is also popular for being the first meeting place between Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson in Arthur Conan Doyle’s novel.
