On his come back from the ceremony, Wilson was killed by two Irish Republican Army volunteers.
The Liverpool Street Station you see now isn’t the initial one built on the spot as in 5 December 1964 the first one was burnt down by a fire. 40 fire engineers, 12 turntable ladders and over 200 firefighters fought with the gigantic blaze but until it was stopped the station was already completely damaged. This led to necessary construction of a new station, which was designed by the Great Eastern’s chief engineer, Edward Wilson.
