Coming on 3rd spot as the busiest station in England after Waterloo and Victoria, Liverpool Street Station is the most important in London with over 55 million passenger entries and exits between April 2010 and March 2011. It is fully operational since 1 November 1875 on the site of the former Bethlem Royal Hospital.
It was the very first spot in London to be struck by German Gotha G.V bomber aircraft while in World War I. In May 1917 bombing, 162 people were killed when the station was subject to a direct hit from 1,000 pounds of bombs. In 1922, the staff of GER that died while in the War were honored on a massive marble memorial on Liverpool Street’s concourse, revealed by Sir Henry Wilson. On his come back from the ceremony, Wilson was killed by two Irish Republican Army volunteers.
The Liverpool Street Station you see now isn’t the initial one built on the spot as in 5 December 1964 the first one was burnt down by a fire. 40 fire engineers, 12 turntable ladders and over 200 firefighters fought with the gigantic blaze but until it was stopped the station was already completely damaged. This led to necessary construction of a new station, which was designed by the Great Eastern’s chief engineer, Edward Wilson.
