Transfer from Ongar (CM5) to Luton Airport
Chipping Ongar is the major settlement included in the Ongar civil parish. It is located very close to Brentwood, Harlow and Epping. Back in the medieval period, Chipping Ongar used to be a significant market town. The ruins of an imposing Norman castle can still be seen in the town. Saint Martin’s parish church also has Norman influences. It was constructed in the 11th century. The chancel features a small window that has survived from an old anchorite’s cell constructed in the mediaeval times. In 1884 a new southern aisle was added. It has a Gothic Revival style and it was designed by C. C. Rolfe.
In 1965, the Chipping Ongar civil parish was abolished and the Ongar parish was established. At the time, it incorporated the Shelley and Greensted civil parishes. Until 1974, it was included in the Ongar and Epping Rural District and from the late 20th century it was comprised in the district of Epping Forest and its major development started.
