Transfer from Newham (E16) to Heathrow Airport
Even if undergoing constant regeneration the area of Canning Town is still one of the most deprived of London benefiting of poor medical and educational conditions. The development program includes the construction of 10,000 houses and creation of thousands of jobs for the locals, plus two new, modern, town centers. Many investments are done in the hope of bringing the area of Canning Town to its former status before the 19th century when this was a place of great wealth and impressive development.
But the region of the Newham district isn’t formed only of Canning Town. It also includes Silvertown, North Woolwich, Custom House and the closest airport to the center of London – the London City Airport.
Before the 19th century access in the area was a real difficulty as you could reach Canning Town only by boat or a toll bridge, which was later replaced in 1810 with a five span open bridge and again 1934 with. Even under this circumstances and despite the fact that the area was mostly a marshland, Canning Town was overcrowded during the 19th century and continued to increase rapidly. The launch of the Royal Victoria Dock in 1855 sped up the growth of the region generating jobs and a need to house dock employees and their families. New houses developed close to the dock and eventually the areas now known as Custom House, Silvertown and West Silvertown appeared. The new homes were missing water supply and had no sewer system. This lead to the distribution of cholera and smallpox. The casual nature of employment at the docks meant low income and squalid living circumstances for many people.
Bethell Avenue was built in Canning Town after the 1890 Housing Act which made the local authorities in charge for offering decent housing and in the 1890s some of the very first council residences appeared. Nevertheless, many of the terraced properties constructed while in the late 19th Century were little more than slums and eliminated by the council in the 1930s. The council substituted the former homes with first high rise blocks. Today, Canning Town and Custom House are between the five percent most miserable places in the UK. Citizens that live there experience poor health, low education and poverty. 17 percent of the working age inhabitants have a limiting long-term illness, 17.5 percent claim income support and 49.7 percent of 16-74 year old have no formal employment certificates.

Silvertown looks a lot better than the neighboring Canning Town as industry developed on a fast pace here. The first major factory was built in 1852 by Samuel Winkworth Silver. The area is also named after the creator of the factory which was initially built to make waterproof clothing and ended up to design submarine cables. Until 1860 several manure and chemical works and petroleum storage areas had been built. Soon after the construction of the rubber factory the area started to expand as some other industries joined Silvertown. Sugar refineries found a home in Silvertown in 1877.
The expanse of Silvertown continued uninterrupted until 1917 when a part of it was devastated by the explosion of a TNT bomb at the Brunner-Mond munitions factory. It was considered one of the greatest explosions to ever happen in the British Isles. A regeneration of the area takes place even since 1970 when the Thames Barrier was constructed. At the same time new houses were added as well as a park. The latest addition to Silvertown is the Silvertown Ambulance Station on North Woolwich Road which was open in 2007.
Taxi Transfer from London City Airport to Heathrow Airport
The 25 year old airport celebrates a fantastic event this year at it hit the one million mark on 11 July 2012, when AG5118 flight reached London City Airport at 08:50 a.m. coming from Dublin.
The construction of London City Airport was part of a program that aimed to help regenerate the area and was initially set up for 1981 but it took about 6 years until the plans were made and the construction was finished. The first airplane arrived on 31 May 1987, with the first commercial services operating from 26 October 1987. Queen Elizabeth II formally opened London City Airport the same year in November.
In its first year of life London City Airport recorded a number of 133,000 passengers that flew to and from Paris, Amsterdam, Plymouth and Rotterdam. It was a small number due to the fact that the airport was only available for certain type of airplanes. After an expansion that provided London City Airport the possibility to be used by most types of airplanes, the airport witnessed an increase in passengers. Starting with 1990 the numbers went up considerably. 230,000 passengers used London City in that year, while, by 1995, the number reached half a million. Records show that in the year 2000 more than 1,500,000 passengers were already using London City Airport. As a result to the continuous expansions made to London City, the number of passengers using the airport became even higher, moving past 2 million in 2006. Four new stands and gates were added since 2008. Future developments are already decided for London City Airport for the next three years when the interior of the terminal will be restored.
