Nowadays, this has been modified to contain the head of a white horse, and an iguanadon. In ancient times the town was also a flourishing commerical area, mostly because of the River Medway in 1739. A great deal of trade, such as corn, fruit, fodder, timber and stone passed via this area in that period.
In ancient times the area’s income was dependent upon paper production, quarrying, brewing and cloth production. Currently, quarrying is still one of the major activities in Maidstone but only one of the numerous breweries is left.
