Transfer from Tower Hamlets (E1) to Heathrow Airport
Whitechapel’s center is Whitechapel High Street, stretching towards east as Whitechapel Road, known after a modest church could once be seen in the area. The chapel’s first recognized rector was Hugh de Fulbourne in 1329 and close to 1338 it started to be the parish chapel of Whitechapel, known as, for unidentified motives, St Mary Matfelon. The chapel was ruined during World War II and its former position and graveyard is today a garden opened to public on the south part of the street.
Both Whitechapel High Street and Whitechapel Road are today portion of the A11 road, which in ancient times was the original component of the Roman path between the City of London and Colchester, exiting the town at Aldgate. Years after travellers that went in or out of London through this path were could find shelter at one of the numerous coaching inns which were layered on the Whitechapel High Street.
Until the 16th century the suburb of Whitechapel and the encircling region had become ‘the other half’ of London. Positioned on the eastern side of Aldgate, exterior to the City Walls and past official controls, it became an interesting region for the less fragrant routines of London, especially breweries, tanneries, slaughterhouses and foundries.
Whitechapel Market and the A11 corridor is at this time going through a £20 million investment to enhance the public areas on the path.
