It was also the place to house the world’s first sea-bathing hospital. This unique features of Margate helped the town become the first popular resort to be visited by middle and lower-middle-class Englishmen. Tourists, generally from London, came ‘rushing’ to Margate. This was followed by a growth as a seaside resort and led to the construction of Cecil Square in 1767, the Royal Hotel, Hawley Square and Assembly Rooms. By 1800, Margate’s population was close to 5000 people.
Even if the bathing machine was firstly invented at Scarborough, this invention played a much greater role in the history of Margate as people came from all across England and abroad to try this new invention. The invention was the first completely fledged device to take people directly into the sea. The machine, started to be used at Margate from around 1750 and had at its back a hooped and hinged textile screen which the driver could let down by managing a lever so that it created a tent on the water. This process allowed the bather to go down the steps of the device to wash in total privatness from any disturbing eyes. The machine became greatly popular and worked as a charm.
