Transfer from Chessington (KT9) to Gatwick Airport
An important landmark in Chessington is the Chessington Hall. This is a country house that has a significant literary history. Fanny Burney’s friend, Samuel Crisp, used to live here. When the house was constructed, in the 18th century, Chessington was only a small village. It wasn’t incorporated in the Greater London area until the 19th century.
In the 18th century, Chessington was located on a desolate and large common and did not have the contemporary prestige and beauty. Samuel Crisp moved here, in the Chessington Hall in 1754, after his play Virginia failed. He shared the house with Christopher Hamilton, a friend of his.
Crisp died in 1783. He is buried in the Chessington churchyard and the church houses a memorial that commemorated him. The original Chessington Hall was demolished in the 19th century, but it was immediately rebuilt. Until the early 20th century, the Chancellor family were the occupants of the home. The house was demolished for the second time in 1965 and replaced with an estate that has a 50s architecture. The only structures that remind of the history and charm of the old Chessington Hall are the graves and monuments.
