Transfer from Notting Hill (W11) to Gatwick Airport
Most of the Notting Hill district was developed in the 19th century. It all began with the Ladbroke Estate development in the 1820s. James Weller Ladbroke outsourced the construction of the estate to Thomas Allason, an English architect. Together, they have built houses and streets and turned the suburb into one of the most fashionable areas in London. The original name of the district was Kensington Park, including roads and places like Kensington Park Gardens and Kensington Park Road.
The most daring idea was to create large communal gardens surrounded by crescents of houses or terraces. They were called “paddocks” or “pleasure grounds”. These green areas were not visible from the street. These gorgeous communal gardens have survived until date and they are still the main attraction for the wealthy homeowners. Unfortunately, the majority of these gardens cannot be seen by the tourists. In 1837, Notting Hill saw another development: the Hippodrome racecourse. It was closed in 1841 because of its lack of success and the site was used to construct houses. Also, numerous roads that are now filled with fashionable boutiques were laid around the former hippodrome.
