Transfer from Walthamstow (E17) to Luton Airport
An historical landmark in Walthamstow is the EMD (Granada) Walthamstow. This is a cinema located on Hoe Street. It dates from 1887 and at first it used to be an arts venue and meeting centre. The EMD was one of the world’s first venues that screened a film in 1896, when this artistic form of communication was born. In 1906, it became the premiere full time cinema in the London area. In 1930, the Granada Theatres purchased the Victoria Hall and converted the venue into a Super Cinema with 2,697 seats. The interior had flamboyant decorations that were designed by Theodore Komisarjevsky, a talented Russian stage designer.
Another refurbishment phase took place in the 1970s. It was modernised, but the historical architectural features remained in use. In the late 20th century, the cinema was divided into 3 cinemas. One of them is larger and it was used for displaying blockbusters and the other 2 are smaller. The venue was closed in 2003, but it’s expected to be reopened in 2013.
