Transfer from Westminster (SW1) to Stansted Airport
The House of Parliament is an imposing building on the shore of Thames and a landmark in London also known by many as the Palace of Westminster. This amazing building is located on the site where Edward the Confessor ordered the original palace building in the first half of the eleventh century.
Even if the monarchists moved in 1547 to Whitehall Palace, the Lords continued to meet at Westminster, while the House of Commons had it’s meeting in the Chapel of St. Stephen. Since those ancient times, the Palace of Westminster was the home of English Parliament. In 1834 a fire managed to destroy much of the old palace. All that remained after this devastating fire was the crypt chapel, a tower and Westminster Hall. Westminster Hall was saved even by Lord Melbourne, Prime Minister of the time, who called fire-fighting pumps to be located right in the room and who personally supervised the firefighting operation.
Westminster Hall entrance is allowed only with accompanying guide. The Hall can be seen from the terrace above St. Stephen. Westminster Hall is 73 feet long and 18 meters wide and has a dome-shaped roof made of oak. These things make Westminster Hall to be one of the most beautiful medieval halls in Europe. Supreme banquets were held in this place full of nobility and history celebrating the coronation ceremonies until 1821. The High Court in England was there until the nineteenth century. Statue of Oliver Cromwell that lies outside the room, remember that in 1653, he was appointed Lord Protector.
To get to the upper chambers of Westminster Hall, visitors must pass through the huge wooden door of St. Stephen’s Hall. In the Central Lobby walls are inlaid Latin motto’s. This is where lords met with their supporters or between them and where “lobbying” for certain laws and ideas. From the Lobby you can get in the House of Lords or Commons.
