The Squerryes Court is a unique attraction in Westerham. It was constructed in the 17th century and it’s located on the outskirts of the town. For more than 280 years, the manor house was owned by the Warde family and today it is an important local landmark surrounded by parkland and large gardens.
The ground that houses the property is more than 800 years old. The first inhabitants of the site were the De Squerie family. They lived there until the 15th century. The present mansion was constructed in 1681 by a London merchant, Nicholas Crispe. The structure has a Georgian style and it is home to numerous Old Master paintings created by the English, Dutch and Italian schools. There is also a large collection of tapestries, porcelain and furniture in the house.
The Squerryes Court Gardens are the most impressive feature of the house. They cover an area of 10 acres and comprise parterres, a gazebo, a lake and a dovecote. They also include flowers like roses, azaleas, wild flowers and spring bulbs.
