Potter Bar was incorporated in Hertfordshire and Sunbury and Staines became part of Surrey. Later, in 1974, the urban districts of Sunbury-on-Thames and Staines merged and they formed the Spelthorne borough. There are still numerous sporting and cultural affiliations that remind of Staines association with the Middlesex County.
