Transfer from Gatwick Airport to Euston Station
Robert and George Stephenson selected the site for the future Euston Station. They were also the engineers of the Birmingham and London Railway. The area they have chosen was mainly farmland and at the time it was located on London’s outskirts. The name of the station was taken from the Euston Hall situated in Suffolk. This was the home for the Grafton Dukes, the landowners of the site. The construction of the station was approved in 1835 and it was finished in 1837. Throughout the years, both the railway and the station have had numerous owners such as Network Rail, London and Birmingham Railway, Railtrack, London and North Western Railway, British Railways and Midland, London and Scottish Railway.
The constructor of the former building was William Cubitt and the designer was Philip Hardwick. Also, Charles Fox, the structural engineer, designed the train shed. In the beginning, the station featured 2 platforms, one for arrivals and one for departures. Hardwick also designed the largest and highest Doric propylaeum in the world. It served as a portico at the entrance and it’s called the Euston Arch.
