Transfer from Stansted Airport to Charing Cross Station
A serious accident took place in 1905, when a portion of the western wall and part of the original roof structure collapsed. It blocked all the rail lines and it fell on 4 passenger trains. It also destroyed the roof and wall of the Royal Avenue Theatre located nearby. Six persons died in that accident. The Chatham and South Eastern Railway replaced the broken roof with a furrow and ridge roof supported by a girder structure. The new roof design maintained the original curve. In 1906, the repaired station was reopened.
During the World War II, the Charing Cross Station was damaged by serious bombing, but it was repaired in 1951. The top floors were completely rebuilt and the Mansard roof in the hotel was restored and now it is made of white brick and features a neo-Georgian style.
The Embankment Place covered the British Rail platforms in 1990. This is a post-modern shopping complex and office whose design was signed by Terry Farrell and Partners. Because of this new development, the roof rebuilt in 1906 was replaced. Nowadays, the PricewaterhouseCoopers Company occupies a large part of Embankment Place.
