The most prominent building in Charlton is the Charlton House. This is one of the best – preserved Jacobean structures in London. It is made from stone dressing and red brick and was constructed from 1607 to 1612. The interior of the house is extremely impressive. It includes a gallery, a saloon, a state dining room, a chapel and a great hall. The first owner of the house was Sir Adam Newton, Prince Henry’s tutor and the Dean of Durham. The designer of the house was John Thorpe. The estate also featured a garden – house that was recently transformed into a large public toilet. The orangery was designed by Inigo Jones. Behind the garden – house, the visitors can still see the oldest Mulberry tree in the country. The tree was planted in 1608.
In 1877, another wing was added to the Charlton House. Throughout the World War I, the grounds and the house were converted into a temporary hospital. After the war finished, the house was used as a museum. Currently, the Charlton House is a community centre and its gardens and grounds were converted into parks.
