Transfer from Gatwick Airport to Eastbourne
Starting with the 19th century the first important constructions started to appear in the area of Eastbourne. The Martello Towers were built during 1804 and 1810 in order to protect the coast in opposition to Napoleonic attacks. The towers spread from Suffolk to Seaford. 22 years later from the construction of the tower, the first lighthouse was built in Eastbourne. It was initially made of wood and later redesigned in stone. The lighthouse also served as a tea house and a home. A decade later the railway was built which also brought the expansion of Eastbourne. The city became hugely popular and populated and many other buildings, some of which you can still see today, were constructed. Visitors from all around England went to Eastbourne to relax in the new, greatly designed hotels and beach houses.
The Second World War saw a change in fortunes for Eastbourne. At first, children were moved to Eastbourne on the supposition that they would be secure from bombing there, but not much time passed until they were moved again because after France was defeated in June 1940 it was believed that Eastbourne will be invaded by Germans. Numerous people searched for protection in other places than the coast and left. Constraints on visitors made most of the hotels close. Not much time passed until the area became mostly abandoned. After the World Wars passed things got back to normal for the coastline town and tourism was again one of Eastbourne’s main areas of income.
