Transfer from Heathrow Airport to Birmingham
Birmingham is the second largest city of Great Britain and one of the biggest industrial centers in the world. Its prosperity is based on engineering, steel and automotive industry. But even if it is one of most powerful industrial centers of the world, the birth place of Cadbury chocolate and Jaguar and Austin Martin is full of recurrent economic crises. The impressive International Convention Centre opened in 1991 represents the efforts to revitalize the economy by introducing new industries, such as services.
What surprises first time visitors is that the city has more trees and open spaces than any other city in Europe. A great part of the downtown was destroyed during the Second World War and the buildings that were built afterwards are not really something the city can praise with. However, since 1990 Birmingham gone through radical changes, many buildings being replaced and a great part of the center was made for pedestrians. The improvements also included cleaning all the sewers of Birmingham. Even if the city has well preserved its industrial heritage, it welcomes its visitors under a modern appearance.
One of the most important landmarks in Birmingham is The Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery.
The museum has an impressive collection of Victorian art and is known worldwide for its pre Rafelian works. Works conducted by all the big names can be found here here: William Holman Hunt, John Everett Millais and Dante Gabriel Rossetti, which reflects the influence of Birmingham’s culture over the industrial aesthetics.
Museum exhibits its artistic, ethnographic, archaeological and historical works in more than 40 galleries. It takes several hours to explore the museums and galleries properly. When the visit is done you can stop in the magnifcent Edwardian tea salon.
