Its popularity started in the Middle Ages when the London Parish clerks performed mystery plays here, based on biblical themes. Later on it became house for the Monastic Order of the Kinghts Hospitallers of St.John of Jerusalem which had its English headquarters there, at the Priory of Clerkenwell. The Order was created with the purpose of offering medical assistance during the crusades. When entering St.John’s Square you can still see a copy of the St. John’s Gate(built by Sir Thomas Docwra in 1504).
After the Crusades passed Clerkwell remained one of the notable places in London and became a fashionable residential area. Aristocrats, dukes, mostly rich people owned houses in the 17th century in South Clerkenwell which easily became a fashionable place of residence. Even Oliver Cromwell lived there for a while, somewhere on Clerkenwell Close, just off the Green. Clerkenwell was regarded at that time as a resort, a short walk out of the city where Londoners could entertain themselves in theatres, spas or tea gardens. One of those places survives until today, the Sadler’s Wells, which has been reconstructed a great number of times and many additional features were brought to the place like circus, music hall, a theatre, pleasure gardens or an aquatic display venue. Present day Sadler’s Wells is known to be one of the greatest theatre and modern dance venue in Europe.
From 1850 to 1960 Clerkenwell was identified as London’s “Little Italy” due to the large number of Italians residing in the region.
Present day Clerkenwell is still regarded as one of the places of entertainment and relaxation as it is home to a great number of restaurants, pubs and bars but also to theatres and public houses.
