Even if today Limehouse has remained just an insignificant port in the district of Tower Hamlets, the medieval times as well as the periods up to the 19th century were much more fortunate times for the Port of Limehouse. Businesses of all type were running swiftly with cargos from all industries passing through the port which had extensive docks and wharves.
One of the most important years in the development of the port was 1820 when the Limehouse Basin opened which linked the Thames and the canal system. This allowed cargoes to be moved from bigger ships to small ones.
From the 19th to the 20th the Port of Limehouse was extremely busy and crowded with sailors from all across the world and great numbers of ships of all types. Workers would be compensated at the end of their expeditions and, unavoidably, lasting communities of overseas sailors were founded, such as colonies of Lascars and Africans from the Guinea Coast. At both Limehouse and ShadwellLarge Chinese communities were created, founded by the crews of merchantmen in the opium and tea trades, particularly Han Chinese. The area beacme highly popular for opium trade in the late 19th century. Like the rest of the East End it Limehouse stayed but a place for immigration.
