One of the first churches in the area was the Church of St Mary. It was constructed in the 12th century. It features a square flint tower that has survived until date. A brick buttress was added in the 19th century so as to support the tower that includes no less than 8 bells. The oldest bell dates from 1606. The Oatlands Palace, constructed in 1538, is located very close to St Mary’s Church. Walton-on-Thames was home to John Bradshaw, the judge who presided the famous trial of Charles I.
