Transfer from Hatfield (AL9) to Stansted Airport
Hatfield is widely known for its aerospace industry. De Havilland aircraft factory and airfield was established in 1930 and in 20 years it managed to evolve into the town’s largest employer. In 1960, Hawker Siddeley took over the factory and in 1978 it became the British Aerospace. In the early 20th century, de Havilland produced small biplanes and during the World War II, it manufactured the Vampire and the Mosquito bomber. The Vampire was the second jet aircraft produced by the British. The factory was expanded after the war was finished and it manufactured the first jet liner in the world, the Comet airliner.
Hatfield stopped being home to the British Aerospace in 1993 and Woodford Aerodrome became the production factory for the BAe 146. British Aerospace’s site in Hatfield became a filming set for “Band of Brothers”, a television drama, and “Saving Private Ryan”, Steve Spielberg’s film. Further on, it was developed into a complex used for retail, commerce, higher education and housing.
