Transfer from Radlett (WD7) to Stansted Airport
In 1929, a grass airfield was opened by Handley Page Ltd. The airfield was used to produce aircraft. By 1939, an upgrade was made to Radlett Aerodrome. Three if its hard runways were used to manufacture the Handley Page Halifax and Handley Page Hampden bombers. They have been utilized during the World War II. After the war was finished, the airfield served as a site for the production of Hermes airlines and Hasting transport aircraft. Two years in a row (1946 and 1947) various air shows were held in Radlett. They were organized by the British Aircraft Constructors Society. In 1970, the airfield was closed because the company went bankrupt a year earlier.
Radlett was included on the Olympic Marathon route in 1948. The course started in Wembley, at the Empire Stadium. Unfortunately, the development of the village stopped in the mid – 20th century, because the Metropolitan Green Belt was introduced. From that moment, the infilling was the only growth method in the area. However, Radlett still features large new homes with immense gardens.
