Transfer from Highbury (N5) to Gatwick Airport
In the 18th century, Highbury included 2 gated terraces, Highbury Place and Highbury Terrace, the Highbury Barn, the Highbury Hill House and the Highbury House. Around these buildings, the authorities planned to develop The Albert Park measuring 250 acres. The park was supposed to run from Seven Sisters Road to Balls Pond Road / St Paul’s Road. Eventually, that site was divided in 2 and 2 different green areas were created: the Finsbury Park, covering 115 acres of land, and the Highbury Fields, measuring 27.5 acres. The other parts of that area have been developed.
There were 2 phases of the development. The large and impressive Italianate villas were constructed until the 1870s and they were located in southern Highbury. After the 1870s, the development featured terraced houses in northern Highbury. Even more housing was constructed until the beginning of the First World War. Serious bombardment took place during the Second World War and the Highbury Corner with its hotel and station were heavily damaged because of this. These buildings were eventually demolished in the mid – 20th century to make room for the Victoria line. Nowadays, you can only see the former westbound platform buildings.
