Theatre is a cultural genre strongly represented in Edinburgh. The city has always supported the production companies and the theatres in the local area. There are numerous theatres in the locality. For example, the Royal Lyceum Theatre features its own company. It can accommodate 658 persons and it dates from 1883. Its design was signed by C. J. Phipps, a British architect. It was refurbished in 1996, 1991, 1977 and 1929, but it has preserved pretty much of its original design.
Some of the largest touring shows in Edinburgh are hosted at the Edinburgh Playhouse, Edinburgh Festival Theatre and King’s Theatre. In case you’re interested in contemporary plays, you must go to the Traverse Theatre. On the other hand, the amateur productions are being played at the King’s Theatre, the Church Hill Theatre and the Bedlam Theatre.
