Transfer from Greenhithe (DA9) to Gatwick Airport
The major attraction in Greenhithe is the Ingress Abbey. The estate used to be a seat in the Greenhithe hamlet. The mansion dates from the early 14th century. For many years, the manor was the property of the Dominican Sisters Abbey and Prioress. Afterwards, the estate was taken over by Henry VIII who constructed a country retreat on the site. It was his stop when he was going to the coast and back. After Henry died, some of the nuns were allowed to come back to Dartford. Still, they were evacuated in the mid – 16th century and the estate passed onto to John Bere and Edward Darbyshire.
Since that moment, the manor had numerous owners such as Edward Brent of Southwark, William Viscount Duncannon and William Haverlock. In the 17th century, the estate consisted of a mansion house, fresh and salt marshes, a manor, a wharf, a farm, lime kiln, chalk cliffs and other lands. In the 19th century, James Harmer, a wealthy barrister, expanded the property and added hermit’s caves, grottoes and follies. In the modern times, the estate was featured in The Missing Prime Minister series.
