Transfer from Leytonstone (E11) to Heathrow Airport
The name Leytonstone is thought to come from a Roman milestone, a place where the obelisk admired today by many was built in the 18th century. The obelisk has many inscriptions on its stone structure but only two have remained visible today:
“To Epping XI Miles through Woodford, Loughton”
“To Ongar XV Miles through Woodford Bridge, Chigwell, Abridge”
The road named High Road Leytonstone is also thought to have been a prehistoric pathway dating before the times the Romans constructed a road on the same path to London. The road was a Roman route from London to Epping Forest. This path became essential for long distant coaches from the 14th century. Nevertheless Roman roads have since been discovered in the course of excavations.
A notable feature of Leytonstone is the fact that the world popular film director Sir Alfred Hitchcock, was born and grew up in the area. At the entrance to Leytonstone tube station there are a great number of mosaics illustrating moments from his movies.
